Why Robusta Prices at a 30-Year High Matter for Coffee Fans

Why Robusta Prices at a 30-Year High Matter for Coffee Fans

In 2023, we set out on a mission to champion robusta coffee, facing a tide of skepticism. Many dismissed robusta as an inferior bean, unsuitable for specialty coffee, and relegated it to anonymity in the coffee rotation. Despite robusta making up 40% of global coffee production, its use was often concealed, perpetuating a stigma against the bean and a lack of transparency within the industry.

In 2017 Vietnamese cheap robusta coffee could go as low as just $6.7 per kg in Australia. Because of this many companies leaned on this low cost, prioritising volume over quality and perpetuating the misconception that robusta’s affordability equated to lower quality. But price doesn’t inherently define value—economic systems and industry choices do. We decided it was time to rewrite the narrative.

Fast forward to Janurary 2025, and Vietnamese robusta prices have reached an astonishing 30-year high, hitting $13 per kg. This monumental rise represents much more than market dynamics—it’s robusta rising, quite literally.

Why is Robusta Coffee getting more expensive?

At Vietcaphe We have consistently invested in direct trade relationships and committed to improving robusta’s quality. This commitment means we pay 26% more than the conventional coffee price in Vietnam, averaging nearly $15 per kilogram. For the first time ever, the global cost of specialty robusta has surpassed that of specialty arabica by 10%, reflecting the incredible demand for robusta.

This price shift stems from our dedication to quality, beginning with the processes we implemented alongside our farmers:

  • Selective Harvesting: Handpicking cherries at peak ripeness.
  • Sustainable Practices: Using organic methods and biofertilizers.
  • Enhanced Post-Harvest Processes: Transitioning to a full wash process that requires more resources but yields a cleaner cup.
  • Manual Sorting: Employing a team to handpick imperfections for consistency and excellence.

By focusing on these rigorous methods, we’ve elevated robusta into the specialty coffee space, proving that this once-overlooked bean deserves its place in the spotlight.

The Perfect Storm: Demand and Climate

Robusta’s rising prices aren’t just the result of quality improvements—they’re also driven by increased global demand. More consumers are recognising robusta’s bold, earthy profile and its unparalleled caffeine kick.

Simultaneously, climate change has reduced arabica yields worldwide, forcing companies to turn to robusta to meet their supply needs. As robusta thrives in hotter, more humid climates, it’s become an essential player in ensuring coffee’s future amid environmental challenges.

What This Means for Farmers and Consumers

The robusta price surge marks a major victory for coffee-growing communities. Higher prices mean improved livelihoods for farmers, especially those who’ve historically been underpaid despite their hard work. For consumers, it represents an opportunity to explore the unique characteristics of robusta, from its deep, nutty flavours to its creamy, velvety mouthfeel in a cup of espresso or Vietnamese iced coffee.

Since 2023, our efforts to elevate robusta have led to remarkable progress. Companies worldwide are now paying attention to robusta, shifting demand and sparking industry-wide change. Yet, some still resist paying fair prices for robusta, clinging to outdated prejudices.

Building a Sustainable Coffee Future

The rise in robusta prices is a win not just for Vietnamese farmers but for coffee-growing communities globally. It underscores the importance of creating a sustainable system where both conventional and specialty growers can thrive.

Historically, coffee prices have lagged behind other agricultural products. While the average price of wine has increased 192% since 1995, coffee has only risen 15%. It’s clear that the coffee industry needs a significant shift to ensure economic empowerment for all growers.

This is why at Vietcaphe, we remain steadfast in our mission. By partnering directly with farmers, improving robusta’s quality, and challenging outdated narratives, we’re helping to design a more sustainable coffee future—one cup at a time.

Let's Celebrate the Robusta Rising

The rise of robusta prices symbolises a transformative moment for the coffee industry. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration, perseverance, and innovation. Together, we’re proving that robusta is more than capable of holding its own in the world of specialty coffee.

So, raise your cup to robusta—a bean that’s defied the odds, uplifted communities, and inspired a movement. Here’s to the people’s grind and a more sustainable, equitable future for coffee!
